What is the difference between EDSL, INET, IPMAN, and EPON ?

EDSL: This is a common internet solution for organizations with generally less than 30 computers, and require standard internet applications. EDSL is suitable for businesses using Email, Web and File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

INET: INET is designed for small-middle sized companies that require non-shared high speed internet access with enterprise resource planning (ERP), and a virtual private network (VPN) as standard applications.

IPMAN: IPMAN is specifically designed for those businesses that require rich media communications such as videoconferencing, telepresence, internet protocol television (IPTV), video streaming, etc.

EPON: EPON utilizes very simple equipment that reduces the amount of fiber and central office equipment needed for setup. This high speed internet solution delivers vast amounts of bandwidth and requires little maintenance, and can be upgraded with other value-added services.

What are the 3 modes of use for a VPN?

1) Intranet VPN’s are between internal corporate departments and branch offices

2) Remote Access VPN’s are between a corporate network and remote mobile employees

3) Extranet VPN’s which are between a corporation and its strategic partners, customers and suppliers (LAN-to-LAN internet working)

What is a VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it is the technology to create a secure private network between two hosts using a public network like the Internet. VPNs use tunneling, encryption, authentication, and access control over a public network at the same time for security.

Who are the primary users of VPNs?

VPNs are typically used by medium-large sized enterprises who engage in frequent business activities and require a high volume of data communication. Also, VPN’s are adopted by companies that are structured through a network of different locations/local branches e.g. IT companies, financial institutions, trade companies, news agencies etc.

Why would my company want to use a VPN?

·   VPNs reduce the costs of telecommunications by using the Internet to carry traffic and by minimizing the number of lines accessing a corporate site

·   VPNs enhance security through tunneling, encryption, and authentication processes

·   VPNs increase performance through dedicated bandwidth

·   VPNs allow remote access and file sharing from different locations, which is shown to increase productivity e.g. employees may work at home or on a business trip

·   You can save on operating expenses by contracting VPN management and equipment costs to a service provider
